SURVIVING, THRIVING, AND ASSISTING THE RESPONDER IN TREATMENT
A Family Education and support program for spouses and significant others of first responders.
Supporting the family behind the uniform
Understanding stress, strengthening connection
When a first responder enters treatment, the entire family system is affected. Spouses and significant others are often left carrying unanswered questions, emotional strain, and the responsibility of holding life together at home. The START Program was created to support those who support the responder—providing clarity, education, and steady guidance throughout the treatment process and beyond.
Family members need support, too the START Program is designed exclusively for spouses, partners, and significant others of first responders, including those in law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services, and dispatch. This program is intentionally family-focused and does not include participation by the first responder, allowing loved ones space to learn, process, and strengthen without added pressure.
Treatment can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming for families. The START Program helps reduce confusion around treatment and recovery while addressing the unique stressors that first responder families face. By increasing understanding, strengthening communication, and supporting healthy boundaries, the program works to reduce environmental and relational stressors that can impact recovery and reintegration.
Participation in the START Program is voluntary and available throughout treatment for spouses, partners, and family members of current and former first responders. Families may engage at their own pace, with the goal of feeling informed, supported, and better prepared for the journey ahead.
Creating Stability during uncertainty
Through culturally responsive education and guided support, participants learn how chronic stress, trauma exposure, and the demands of first responder work affect both the responder and the family system. The program offers practical communication strategies that promote trust and repair, along with tools to establish healthy roles and boundaries that support long-term stability at home.
